New women's program receives support from Eden community

New women's program receives support from Eden community

Efforts to bring a social ministry for women to St. Louis is receiving help and support from Eden faculty, students and alumnae.

Eden Professor, Dr. Kristen Leslie and second-year Eden student Margaret Ann Jessup recently visited Magdalene House and Thistle Farms in Nashville, Tennessee. During their visit, Dr. Leslie and Jessup visted with the Reverend Becca Stevens, founder of Magdalene House and Thistle Farms.

Magdalene House is a residential program for women who have survived lives of prostitution, trafficking, addiction and life on the streets. Thistle Farms is a social enterprise where women learn life skills to transition to independent living after treatment in this community environment. The ministry is based on the simple principle that love is stronger than the forces that drive women to the streets. This ministry served as a contextual education placement for Jessup.

This ministry is soon to come to the St. Louis community. Former Eden Theological Seminary graduates, Rebecca Ragland and Traci Blackmon serve on the Board of Directors for Magdalene St. Louis and Eden Graduates, Emily Hillquist Davis and Laura Jo Wright, as well as Margaret Ann Jessup, serve on various task force committees. The hope it that there will be a Magdalene House providing ministry to women with histories of prostitution and addiction in St. Louis by the summer of 2013.
