Professor Emerita Dr. Peggy Way Dies

Professor Emerita Dr. Peggy Way Dies

The family of the Reverend Dr. Peggy Way, Professor Emerita at Eden, sent us the following obituary, which will appear in the "Nashville Tennessean" soon.

"Peggy Ann Way died peacefully at Alive Hospice in Nashville on July 9, 2016 following a brief battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family love and was 84 years old. At the time of her death, Peggy was still working full time as Professor in the Department of Counselor Education at Argosy University Nashville.

Peggy listened deeply. She was gifted with a brilliant mind and lived a life way ahead of her time. Her legacy might be that she conducted her battles for equality in respectful ways, and always knew that the best way forward was through compassion, critical thinking and peaceful compromise.

From the civil rights movement of the 1950's throughout the following decades of feminist and women's liberation movements and the coinciding acknowledgement of and incorporation of gay and lesbian rights, Peggy Way was a proud and energetic woman with a soul that loved justice even while she deeply understood the difficulties of human community.

Peggy Ann Brainard was born in Ann Arbor, MI in 1931, the daughter of a high-school football coach/teacher and a homemaker. A child of the Great Depression, Peggy was raised in an era of austerity. Playing “fishies in milk” was a good-night ritual with her adored father as they both shared small pieces of white bread and stories of the day.

As a teacher's daughter in the 1930's, Peggy Ann was expected to excel. She was a straight-A student throughout elementary and high school and was only briefly challenged when she developed polio as a sophomore. Nevertheless, even after missing an entire year of school, Peggy graduated as high school valedictorian and went on to receive a full scholarship to the University of Michigan Ann Arbor where she graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in psychology and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

In 1956, Peggy completed her M.S.W. at Wayne State University with highest honors. She met her husband William F. (Bill) Way there, and the two fell in love. They married and moved to Chicago together where they studied for their Master of Divinity degrees in a joint program through Chicago Theological Seminary and the University of Chicago Divinity School.

Bill then directed social service agencies while Peggy was employed by various urban ministries which fortuitously placed her at the center of emerging ecumenical dialogue, the newly defined war on poverty, and the developing civil rights, gay rights and feminist movements.

In 1960, Peggy and Bill were ordained in the United Church of Christ in a joint celebration -- a rare occurrence at the time! As she moved from her work as a clinical social worker and minister into academia, Peggy served on the faculties of the University of Chicago Divinity School and the Jesuit School of Theology in Chicago -- where her students made her an honorary Jesuit! Bill and Peggy raised two children, Rebecca Ann Way and Steven William Way, in these heady and vibrant decades of social change.

In 1977, as she was completing her work for her Ph.D. at Princeton Theological Seminary, Peggy was invited to join the faculty of Vanderbilt Divinity School where her ecumenical and inter-faith focus continued. She was only the second woman in the history of VDS to be granted tenure. After more than a decade in Nashville, she and her husband moved to St. Louis, MO where she joined the faculty of Eden Theological Seminary and served as the school's first Allen and Cornelia Wehrli Professor of Pastoral Theology and Counseling. Bill passed away in 1992. Peggy remained in St. Louis until her retirement in 2004 when she returned to Nashville and found new opportunities to be active and began to teach full-time in the M.A. in clinical mental health counseling and Ed.D. programs in counselor education and supervision at Argosy University.

Peggy was an active participant in the lives of her four grandchildren, Nicholas Way (Brandi), William Way (Lauren), Peter Sturdevant, and Mahsa (Margie) Peggy Way-Kiani. She included them in her travels and enjoyed raucous rounds of her favorite card game, Cheat the Devil, with them. She was just getting to know her two great-grandchildren, Collin and Caitlin, and she adored her English Bulldog, Hillary.

Peggy touched everyone she met, and her circle of relationships grew, spanning the generations. She will be missed for her spirit of integrity. She faced life with great faith, quick wit and perseverance. She was a powerful preacher and an unusually engaging teacher. When she preached or taught she almost always had a torn piece from the current issue of the New York Times in hand and a relevant scripture passage in mind.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at 2:00 pm, at Glendale Baptist Church, 1021 Glendale Lane, Nashville, TN."
